The problem of pollination decline

Many plants need pollinators for their reproduction and to produce good fruits. Worldwide since the end of the 20th century the number of pollinators is decreasing. Pollinators are for example bees and other insects.

Today i harvested the first potatoes of the season. I grew them in a greenhouse but they're still very small, from one plant only 450 grams. So i'll have to wait still a few weeks. I always grow some potato plants in my greenhouse of a species that gives an early harvest. They cannot be kept long but are still much better than the old potatoes of last year.
Also today i discovered Colorado beetle larvae on some of my potato plants. I've never had this problem before and hope that they won't become a pest. By hand i take off the larvae and i hope i can contain their spread. Far left on the picture there's also a greenfly (i think that's what it is).
Below a picture of potatoes that grow outside. They're of a sturdy species that are not susceptible to Phytophthora infestans. The blue flowers on the photo is linseed and the yellow one is rape.

Nitrogen cycle

Nitrogen CycleImage via WikipediaNitrogen cycle

Up Agriculture

For practical purposes, when you apply organic material to a soil for fertilization, you need to consider the ratio between C (carbon) and N (nitrogen) in the material. This ratio should not exceed 20:1 (C:N). When there is too much carbon in the material, the micro-organisms that decompose the organic matter need extra nitrogen for the buildup of their own cells and they will (temporarily) extract this from the soil. This article tells more about it and also gives the ratios for diverse organic materials. Also when you make compost you need to consider this ratio for the mix of materials that you use.

Articles general
  • Denitrification - "Denitrification is a microbially facilitated process of nitrate reduction that may ultimately produce molecular nitrogen (N2) through a series of intermediate gaseous nitrogen oxide products." - Wikipedia
  • Nitrification - "Nitrification is the biological oxidation of ammonia with oxygen into nitrite followed by the oxidation of these nitrites into nitrates. Degradation of ammonia to nitrite is usually the rate limiting step of nitrification. Nitrification is an important step in the nitrogen cycle in soil." - Wikipedia
  • Nitrogen cycle - "The nitrogen cycle is the process by which nitrogen is converted between its various chemical forms. This transformation can be carried out via both biological and non-biological processes. Important processes in the nitrogen cycle include fixation, mineralization, nitrification, and denitrification." - Wikipedia
  • Nitrogen fixation - "Nitrogen fixation is the natural process, either biological or abiotic, by which nitrogen (N2) in the atmosphere is converted into ammonia (NH3). This process is essential for life because fixed nitrogen is required to biosynthesize the basic building blocks of life, e.g., nucleotides for DNA and RNA and amino acids for proteins. Nitrogen fixation also refers to other biological conversions of nitrogen, such as its conversion to nitrogen dioxide." - Wikipedia
  • Organic Materials as Nitrogen Fertilizers - "Organic materials usually are added to soils to provide such plant nutrients as nitrogen and to improve the physical nature of the soil. - Organic residues that have a low nitrogen content can cause nitrogen deficiencies in plants as microorganisms decompose the organic compounds. - Inorganic nitrogen must be added with some organic fertilizers to prevent nitrogen deficiencies in Crops" - Colorado State University

Sawdust as fertilizer

Saw dust with hand sawImage via WikipediaUp Agriculture

Sawdust can be used as fertilizer in your garden. It improves the structure of the soil. But be careful, because the micro-organisms that convert the sawdust need extra nitrogen during a few months. Sawdust is low in nitrogen, herefore it is advised to add a nitrogen fertilizer with the gift of sawdust if your plants need nitrogen during this period.

Articles general

  • Sawdust - "Sawdust is a by-product of cutting lumber with a saw, composed of fine particles of wood. It can present a hazard in manufacturing industries, especially in terms of its flammability." - Wikipedia
Sawdust in your garden
  • How to Garden With Sawdust in the Soil - "If you have heavy clay or sandy soil in the garden, it is a common practice to incorporate organic matter into it to improve moisture retention and to loosen up the texture. If organic matter is not incorporated, your plants will not thrive there; they may even die in heavy clay. One type of organic matter that can be mixed into the soil is sawdust. Nitrogen loss can occur, however, so additional fertilization may be required." - eHow.com
  • Making Use of Sawdust - "Consider using sawdust when it is easily and cheaply obtainable. Prepared properly and sawdust is a great organic waste for the garden. Sawdust is low in nutrients such as nitrogen when compared against products like straw or lucerne. This factor detracts many gardeners from using sawdust. In their raw state, hardwood and softwood contain poisonous substances, which may be harmful to your plants, but they can be easily leached." - Suite101.com
